SFA Deep Roots Short Course: Introduction to Homestead Dairy
SFA Deep Roots Farmer Development Program presents Introduction to Homestead Dairy An opportunity for on-farm, hands-on experience with dairy livestock Who should attend? Anyone wondering about adding a dairy component to their farm enterprise or who would like more information to guide their current dairy practices. When: 1-4 p.m. Sun., May 1, 2016 Where: Paradox Farm, 11643 State Highway 78, Ashby, Minn. (ten miles south of Battle Lake; seven miles north of Ashby) Cost: $60 per person. Description: This course introduces students to the topic of homestead dairy farming. Topics include: Holistic management: How dairy can fit with a homestead life Animal selection Managing the dairy animal (nutrition, breeding) Basic equipment Buildings/Structures and logistics Milk handling and processing Wear clothing appropriate for working with animals: closed-toe shoes, gloves, long pants. NOTE: For those who would like hands-on experience with milking and animal handling, two milking labs will be offered: 6:30-9:30 a.m. May 1 and 5:30-8:30 p.m. May 1. Each lab requires separate registration, is limited to 2 people and costs $60. Introduction to Homestead Dairy" is led by Sue Wika, Ph.D., and Tom Prieve, DVM, both instructors of the SFA Deep Roots Farmer Development Program.
